So I created this blog a few weeks ago but since then have been complaining to Matt that I don't have anything to blog about. I mean I have a wonderful daughter who does cute and amazing things everyday, but they are things that you just have to see to really enjoy so I didn't want to constantly write about how she slept for 6 hours the other night or how she finally is taking a bottle willingly (even though those things are AWESOME!). But today something amazing happened that I want to shout to the world because I am so stoked about it! As you probably know I am taking online classes at the Art Institute working towards a diploma in Residential Planning - pretty much a shortened version of the Interior Design BA. The class I'm taking right now is called Basics of Interior Design and for one of my assignments this week I have to find an interior designer in my area and interview them. I needed to have the interview set up by today and tell my teacher about it so she knows I am working on the assignment and not leaving it to the last minute. So this morning I went to Google (like I always do when I am looking for something) and searched "Interior Designers near Wells, ME."I wasn't really hoping for much, but it was a place to start. The first few hits weren't what I was looking for but I clicked on a couple of the websites and finally came across Kennebunk Kitchens and Baths and clicked on it. The website was really nicely laid out and professional (which always makes me feel like it is a reputable site or business). It looked pretty good and it is pretty much owned and run by one person who is a designer. So I called and set up an interview for today around 2:30. I had some trouble finding the place but eventually got there and started the interview. The owner is really nice, her name is Pam, and she just adored Regan (of course, who wouldn't!). I asked her my questions and we talked about what it is like being an interior designer. I asked her what opportunities there were for new graduates in the field. She didn't really know much on that topic but it lead to her mentioning that she could use someone to help her out in her business since she pretty much runs it by herself. She said a lot of the time she will have to go see a client or go to their house to take measurements and has to just leave her showroom closed because she doesn't have anyone there to answer the phone or meet with people who want to see the displays. This of course struck my interest because I was immediately thinking that I would love to get that job! I danced around the question I really wanted to ask right away, which was "Will you hire me to do it?!" and asked things like "so if you were to hire someone what would they do" and "if I was interested would you want to wait until I finish my program in the fall to hire me on?" These questions led to us talking about what I would be doing and when I could start and how much she would pay me and all of that stuff. SO I went there to interview an interior designer and get my assignment done and left with an AWESOME internship opportunity!! I will probably start in June, whenever Wells school district gets out for summer so I can have my mother-in-law (hopefully) help me out with Regan. I will just do two four hour shifts a week and make around $10 and hour. I will basically be like her secretary at first, answering the phones and showing clients her displays and keeping the displays neat and clean and stuff like that. But while no clients are there I can take that time to learn about all the different products and options available and Pam will teach me what she knows. Then after a while she said she would start bringing me drawing to help her with and then start just bringing me measurement from clients houses and let me work out floor plans by myself and eventually I would be able to take on my own clients and projects and start getting a percentage of what she makes on jobs!! She has been in the design field for 27 years she said and has had her business for 6 years so she has a lot of knowledge and experience she can share with me to help me really get a good start as a designer! I am so excited and feel like Heavenly Father just plopped this in my lap and said "here you go! Enjoy!" I am so blessed and can't wait to get started this summer, it will be so fun and such an awesome job and opportunity. I will finally have a job I am excited to go to everyday!! And I'm really happy about this because I have been panicking lately and wondering what the heck I am going to do when I finish my (EXPENSIVE) program in the fall. And now I know what I am going to do and feel like the money I am spending on this program will be worth it. YAY! I love life :)
